Vol. 197 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Manufacturing Industry.

12.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach (1) the total number employed in manufacturing industry at the latest available date, (2) the break-down of this figure into the main manufacturing industry categories, (3) the number of establishments in each of these categories, and (4) the number employed in each category by firms which are owned and controlled by Irish nationals.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the particulars requested at (1), (2) and (3) of the Deputies' question for the latest available date. The particulars requested at (4) of the question are not available.

Following is the statement:—

*The estimates of persons engaged are derived from the quarterly Industrial Production Inquiry which is carried out on a sample basis. These estimates are provisional and are subject to amendment in the light of the results of the Annual Census of Industrial Production for 1962.

† The number of establishments shown are those included in the Census of Industrial Production for 1960.

Is it possible to get any information or any break-down with regard to (4)?

Is there no possible sources from which that information can be got?

It would be only a very rough estimate, if any.

May I ask if the Parliamentary Secretary would make the rough estimate available?

The Taoiseach has done a lot of guessing. He ought to allow the Parliamentary Secretary——

The Deputy is confused enough. I should hate to give him inaccurate information.

The Taoiseach is getting sense.
