Vol. 197 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Tariff Reductions.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance if the ten per cent. reduction in tariffs on industrial goods, which is to become effective on 1st January 1963, will be recognised by the EEC as part of Ireland's agreed tariff reductions when negotiations with that body ultimately take place.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance if any indication has been given by the European Economic Community that account will be taken of, and credit allowed for, the tariff reductions which will become effective on 1st January, 1963 in the general rhythm of tariff reduction which will become effective should this country adhere to the European Economic Community.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to take Questions Nos. 24 and 25 together.

This matter will form part of the negotiations with the member States of the EEC on the rhythm of tariff reductions to be applied to our industrial tariffs.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance at what intervals it is proposed to reduce Irish tariffs prior to the possible entry of this country into the European Economic Community; and by how much such tariffs will be reduced.

The recent cut in industrial protective tariffs was described in the official announcement as an initial move in the dismantling of protection. It may, therefore, be expected to be followed at appropriate intervals by further reductions. No decision in detail has been taken about this as a further cut would not be appropriate before 1st January, 1964, and it is possible that by that date Ireland will be a member of the European Economic Community and be obliged to apply a particular rhythm of tariff reduction.
