Vol. 197 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Locomotive Works.

61.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether CIE have any plans for the future utilisation of the locomotive works at Limerick; and, if so, what the employment prospects are likely to be.

62.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state with reference to the CIE locomotive works at Limerick the number employed there (a) on 1st January, 1958, and (b) at present.

I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission to take Questions Nos. 61 and 62 together.

I am informed by CIE that repair and maintenance of wagons and diesel locomotives will continue at Limerick. The major overhaul of locomotives and the building of wagons at the Limerick works has ceased. The total number employed in the Limerick locomotive works on 5th January, 1958, was 305; the total number at present employed in the works is 243. The Board expects that there will be a further reduction of about ten employees at the end of the present year and employment in the works will then probably stabilise.
