Vol. 197 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC: Irish Industrial Production.

9.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach whether the disclosures in the Central Bank Report and elsewhere that virtually all manufacturing groups showed either a lower rate of production, or else only a slightly higher rate in 1962 than in 1961, and that the economic situation is developing less favourably than in 1961, with a falling-off in industrial growth and a rise in current consumption, affect his view that Ireland is in a fit state to enter the EEC as a full member.

The Deputies are misreading the publications of the Central Bank. They contain no "disclosures," being based entirely on information already available to the Government regarding industrial production and other matters. This information shows that substantial economic progress continues to be made this year, with industrial output and real national income increasing and does not support the Deputies' implication that Ireland is unfit for membership of the European Economic Community.
