Vol. 198 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fire Fighting Services.

11.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce legislation to establish a national fire service in place of the present services which are controlled by individual local authorities.

The answer is in the negative.

12.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of different-sized hydrant and hose fittings used by fire-fighting services in the State.

The total number of hydrants is approximately 30,000. They are classified according to type of outlet and not size. There are four such types. Information is not available as to the number of each type but it is estimated that over 80 per cent are of the bayonet-lugged type in use in the Dublin area. Hose fittings include standpipes, adaptors and couplings. There are four types of standpipes corresponding to the four types of outlets and two sizes of hose couplings. Information as to the number of each type or size is not available. Adaptors are used to allow different types of standpipes and different sizes of couplings to be interchanged.

13.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government whether fire insurance companies make contributions towards the cost of public fire-fighting services; and, if so, what is the annual amount thereof.

The answer is in the negative.
