Vol. 198 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consolidation of Local Government Law.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has any proposals to consolidate the law in relation to local government, in view of the policy of consolidation being pursued in the Department of Justice.

Several branches of local government law have already been consolidated. The law in regard to borrowing powers was consolidated by the Local Government (No. 2) Act, 1960. Legislation on road traffic is consolidated in the Road Traffic Act, 1961, and that in regard to private housing in the Housing (Loans and Grants) Act, 1962. Consolidation of some aspects of sanitary services law was effected by the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1962. Proposals for the consolidation of the planning code are at present before the House and a Bill to implement the majority of the recommendations of the Joint Committee on Electoral Law will be presented shortly. Proposals for the consolidation of other branches of local government legislation, such as those dealing with local authority housing and sanitary services are being prepared and I hope to place them before the House during the coming year.
