Vol. 199 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Border Pass Books.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the abolition of pass books for cross-border motor vehicles.

The answer is in the negative. I have closely examined this question very recently and I share the view of the Revenue Commissioners that the pass book system is, in present circumstances, an essential element in the Customs control of the land frontier.

Does the Minister realise that the British authorities have abolished the pass book?

I know that.

In view of that, would the Minister not reconsider the position?

It is always being reconsidered.
