Vol. 200 No. 9

Committee on Finance - Vote 28—Charitable Donations and Bequests.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £300 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1963, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Charitable Donations and Bequests Office (No. 17 of 1961).

I do not understand why, as this is purely an eighth round increase, it was not included when the Estimates were being framed this time last year because it was obvious that such an increase would come. Be that as it may, I want to put this on record that since the enactment of the Charities Bill, the Commissioners of Charitable Donations and Bequests have done very much more work than ever before in a comparable period of time and I think I am speaking not merely for those who are interested in charities but for those such as solicitors, and so forth who have been connected with this work. The experience has been a happy one in that since the enactment of that Bill, the Commissioners and their officers have, through the new statutory powers, greatly facilitated the expenditious and convenient handling of certain charity matters.

Vote put and agreed to.
