Vol. 201 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pension and Emoluments of CIE Chairman.

18.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Transport and Power the estimated pension and emoluments payable to the chairman of CIE.

19.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Transport and Power the permissible period allowed to the chairman of CIE (1) on full salary, (2) on half salary, and (3) on pension rate in the event of illness incapacitating him from employment in the company.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to take Questions Nos. 18 and 19 together.

The conditions of appointment of the chairman of CIE do not provide for any alteration in the salary payable during illness incapacitating him from employment in the company. Section 7 (4) (a) of the Transport Act, 1950, provides that the Government may at any time remove from office any member of the Board who has become incapable through ill-health of performing efficiently his duties as such member.

The amount of the pension and gratuity payable on retirement to the chairman of CIE falls to be determined in accordance with the provisions of the Córas Iompair Éireann (Members) Superannuation Scheme, 1960 (S.I. No. 139 of 1960).
