Vol. 201 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Supermarkets.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his Department at present exercise any control over the setting-up of shops or chains of shops, particularly of the supermarket type, by non-nationals in this country; if so, what control; and whether his Department collect any information, or exercise any control, as to the proportion of imported goods and in particular imported foodstuffs, sold by such shops or chains of shops, or as to the number, age, etc., of their employees.

There are no controls exercised by my Department over entry into trade or business, apart from the obligation on foreign companies establishing a place of business in the State to register under the Companies Acts.

My Department does not, in relation to foodstuffs, collect information or exercise controls of the kind referred to by the Deputy. The conditions of employment of the staff of shops are subject to the appropriate employment legislation.
