Vol. 201 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Professional Boxing.

37.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the recent further death of a boxer in a prize-fight in America and of the recent categorical condemnation by a Vatican source of professional boxing as a form of practical atheism, the Government propose to introduce legislation banning professional boxing in Ireland as a lead to the world in bringing about an end of prize fighting.

As professional boxing is such a rare occurrence in this country, I am not satisfied that the introduction of legislation along the lines suggested could be justified.

Is the Minister satisfied that there is no danger in amateur boxing?

That would appear to be a separate question.

The Minister is only shadow-boxing.
