Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garden of Remembrance.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance whether a centrepiece has been decided on for the Garden of Remembrance; if so, what its final form is to be; who is the artist responsible; by whom and on whose advice was he chosen to carry out the work; whether a competition was held; or whether chosen artists were asked to submit designs.

The form of the memorial sculpture for the Garden of Remembrance has not yet been settled.

As the Deputy will be aware, a competition was held for the design of the Garden and the architect who submitted the winning design suggested, merely for the purpose of illustration, a central feature, comprising a monument representing Éire guarded by warriors of the four provinces, with a background of patriots in bas relief. A competition was not held for the sculptural work nor were designs sought, but on the recommendation of the architect, Mr. Oisin Kelly was asked to prepare a preliminary report showing his ideas on the subject. That report is under consideration but I am not at the moment in a position to say when a final decision will be taken.
