Vol. 203 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Donegal Castles.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take immediate steps to preserve the fast-decaying Donegal Castle and McGrath's Castle, near Pettigo, County Donegal.

The portions of Donegal Castle in the guardianship of the Commissioners of Public Works for preservation as a national monument comprise only the structure and curtain walls which are generally in good condition. The Commissioners have been aware for some time that the adjoining areas were not all that could be desired but these were not under their control and they had no function in regard to them. I understand that the position has recently changed. An area surrounding the Castle and the garden inside the walls has been vested in the Donegal County Council and Bord Fáilte Éireann propose to finance works to improve the amenities. The Commissioners will cooperate as may be required.

McGrath's Castle is not in State care and the Commissioners of Public Works have not any proposals before them in regard to it.

Would the Commissioners consider taking over McGrath's Castle for the purpose of having it preserved as a national monument?

The National Monuments Advisory Council has considered the propriety or otherwise of taking over McGrath's Castle and they have decided not to put forward the castle for our next list of take-overs, so to speak. They consider it should not be given priority and that there are other castles more worthy of consideration.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider making representations to Bord Fáilte to do something with the castle to preserve it, pending its being taken over?

All these matters are under active consideration at present.
