Vol. 203 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co-operative Societies.

40.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, further to a reply of 1st May with regard to co-operative societies, the committee set up by him in 1958 to inquire into and report on the alterations which should be made in the law to promote co-operative effort by societies capable of being registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts, or the Friendly Societies Acts, was consulted as to the possibility of altering the law so as to prevent the registration of societies which were seeking to take advantage of the exemption from income tax of co-operatives prior to the Government decision to end such exemption, except in the case of agricultural co-operatives; and, if so, what was the result of such consultations.

The answer is no. This matter did not come within this Committee's terms of reference.

41.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give a more exact estimate than that given in a reply of 1st May, as to the early date at which he expects the committee on co-operative societies set up by him in 1958 to present its report.

I am not in a position to give more specific information in regard to the date for submission of this report than I gave in my reply of 1st May.
