Vol. 203 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Templemore (Tipperary) Subpostmaster

75.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the circumstances under which it has been found necessary to advertise for the filling of the post as subpostmaster at Templemore, County Tipperary, in view of the fact that the present occupant has performed his duties with complete satisfaction for thirty-six years, and that the post in question has been occupied by his family for upwards of sixty years.

It is necessary to instal a second switchboard in Templemore post office to enable telephones to be provided for 16 applicants some of whom applied in 1961. The subpostmaster has objected to taking on any additional telephone work and he has refused permission for the installation of the second switchboard in contravention of the terms of his appointment which stipulate that he will make proper provision for postal, telegraph and telephone work. All attempts to persuade the subpostmaster to change his mind were unsuccessful and, as it is necessary to give service to the waiting applicants, there was no alternative to giving him notice of termination of his appointment.

Question No. 76 postponed.
