Vol. 203 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seirbhís Altranais an Airm: Working Fortnight.

95.

asked the Minister for Defence why the 90-hour working fortnight was not introduced for members of Seirbhís Altranais an Airm.

Arrangements are being made to recruit additional members for Seirbhís Altranais an Airm to ensure that the working hours will not exceed a general average of 90 hours a fortnight.

Would the Minister say how long these arrangements have been in hand?

I cannot say precisely but apparently negotiations have been going on with the military authorities. Difficulty arose out of the question of maintaining four hospitals when there was not a sufficient number of patients. The military authorities did not wish to close down any of them and this has been the main cause of the delay.

Is the Minister aware that the organisation have been unable to get any satisfactory answer from the Department or even to get his Department to meet them?

It is being attended to anyway.

The Minister will arrange that they are met now?

That is not exactly what I said.

Would it not be the right thing to say?

The matter is being dealt with adequately.

Surely the organisation is entitled at least to be met?
