Vol. 203 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import Tax on Newspapers and Journals.

8.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Finance whether, in accordance with the trend towards free trade conditions, the Government intend to remove the import tax on cross-Channel newspapers and journals.

The general reduction of 10 per cent in the rates of most customs duties, which took place on 1st January, 1963, applied to the customs duties on newspapers and periodicals. The question of reducing these duties further will fall to be considered in connection with any future general reduction in tariffs. There is, however, no immediate intention of abolishing the duties in question.
