Vol. 203 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Castle Staff Accommodation.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance what staff is to be housed in the cross block now being rebuilt at Dublin Castle for the Revenue Commissioners at a total estimated cost of £115,000.

The reconstructed cross block at Dublin Castle will provide accommodation for about 90 heads of staff of the Revenue Commissioners as well as a certain amount of storage space.

The former cross block had to be demolished because, like other buildings at the Castle, it was found to be in a dangerous condition. The staff displaced are at present temporarily accommodated in various other premises in the city, but the arrangement is generally unsatisfactory.

Is it not true to say one of the reasons why it is necessary to spend this £115,000 is to provide additional accommodation for the officers of the Department who will be dealing with the new turnover tax?

I do not know whether that was foreseen or not when this was considered a couple of years ago.

Is it not enough for the public to have to pay the tax without having to pay this £115,000 to provide the accommodation for such work?

The Minister for Finance has great foresight. He must have foreseen this two years ago.

That is an admission for you.
