Vol. 203 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thomas Davis Statue.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in connection with the statue of Thomas Davis to be provided at a total estimated cost of £15,000, he will give details of the work.

As indicated in my reply to a question on 23rd April, the approved design of the memorial to Thomas Davis which is to be erected in College Green, Dublin, consists of a paved platform measuring about 55 feet by 18 feet by 9 inches high with a pedestal and a bronze figure of Davis, approximately 10 feet high and a circular pool embellished with bronze reliefs depicting Young Ireland.

I might add that, in accordance with the undertaking given during the reply to the recent debate on the Vote for Public Works and Buildings, the maquette of the statue has been placed on exhibit in the Library of the House. As the maquette is made of wax and is liable to deteriorate quickly, it can remain on exhibit only for a very limited period.

Has the Minister examined the estimate very closely and, if so, will he tell us how it comes about that a ten-foot statue in bronze can cost £15,000?

I saw the estimate.

Is the Minister quite satisfied it is a reasonably accurate estimate?

I think it is an accurate estimate.
