Vol. 203 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Female Workers in Germany.

12.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether Irish female workers employed in Germany were locked out of their hostels as a result of a recent strike, and were left without shelter; whether he has investigated the matter; and, if so, with what results.

I have been informed by our Embassy in Bonn that, owing to a metal-work trade dispute in Heidenheim, Baden-Wurttemberg, there was a lock-out of workers, including approximately 17 Irish girls, from about 29th April to 4th May, 1963. The Irish employees were not shut out of their hostel and they were supplied with food for the period of the dispute.

Is the Minister aware that information has been conveyed to me by the family of at least one of the girls to the effect that they were shut out of the hostel and left without shelter? The only shelter made available was in the Catholic church.

That is not true.

That is the statement made to me.

It is not true.
