Vol. 203 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Northern Ireland Bread in Republic.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has considered the effects on the Irish wheat-growing industry, if North of Ireland bread is allowed into the Republic.

The effects of the recent Government decision to replace quantitative restrictions on importation of bread by tariff protection will be kept under review in consultation with the various interests concerned.

Can the Minister say at this stage what is the tariff protection proposed as a substitute?

No order has yet been made.

The Minister is not in a position to say what amount the tariff will be?

No order has been made.

It will not be known until the order is made?

If and when the order is made, it will specify the tariff.

Can the Minister say when the order will be made?

This order will be made by the Minister for Industry and Commerce and, as I said, anything that takes place will follow consultations with interested people.

Does the Minister know when it is intended to make the order?

I think some time in June, but I am not fully sure.
