Vol. 203 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - UNO Contribution to Congo Forces.

17.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if it is a fact that the contribution by UNO towards the extra payments made to forces serving in the Congo is greater per man in the case of troops of all other nationalities than in the case of Irish troops.

The special overseas allowance which we pay our troops serving with the United Nations Force in the Congo is, I understand, higher than that paid by some of the participating countries but less than that paid by others. The rate at which this allowance is paid to members of the Force is the responsibility of their respective governments. In all cases the United Nations refunds the amount of the allowance to the government concerned.

The special daily subsistence allowance paid by the United Nations itself is the same for all members of the Force in the Congo irrespective of nationality.
