Vol. 203 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Imported Fruit.

18.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Agriculture whether duty is paid on fruit imported into this country; if so, what is its extent; and what functions he has in relation to the matter.

The Minister for Agriculture is concerned only with fruits which can be commercially grown in this country. As set out in the official publication "Customs and Excise Tariff of Ireland", customs duties are ordinarily payable on the importation of such fruits but the Minister may, if circumstances so warrant, recommend to the Minister for Finance remission of whole or part of the specified duty.

Could I ask the Minister has he no responsibility for the very high cost of citrus fruits, in particular oranges?

I have responsibility only for fruits which in the normal way can be commercially grown here.

There is no tax on these oranges?

I cannot say.
