asked the Minister for Health if he will state for each of the years 1936 to 1962 inclusive (a) the grants made available in each case by his Department towards the erection and improvement of hospitals in County Cork and (b) the total cost of the works in each case.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Hospitals.
The total number of institutions in Cork in respect of which grants were made available from the Hospitals Trust Fund during the period specified was 36. The purposes for which grants were made available included the provision of a regional sanatorium, an orthopaedic hospital, a new maternity hospital, a new institution for mentally handicapped persons, a new admission unit at a mental hospital, reconstruction and adaptation works at existing hospitals, provision of new equipment, installation of central heating and sanitary annexes and lifts and fire escapes at certain hospitals, provision of accommodation for staff, carrying out of major schemes of repairs and so on.
The compilation of a statement in the particular form requested would entail an undue expenditure of time and labour when so many different hospitals and so many different types of projects are involved, and taking into account that a period of 27 years is specified. Information is available, however, regarding the total grant-payments made in each financial year to each of the institutions in the area administered by Cork Health Authority and the details are set out in a tabular statement which I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to circulate in the Official Report.
Information is not readily available regarding the total cost of each capital project carried out in Cork over the period of 27 years covered in the question and it would involve detailed research of departmental records and files and reference to many of the hospital authorities concerned to determine the total cost in each instance. Details of the total cost of the major projects are included in the tabular statement to be circulated in the Official Report.
STATEMENT showing the amounts paid by way of grant from the Hospitals Trust Fund for hospital building and equipment works in the Cork area in the years 1936-37 to 1962-63 inclusive.
