Vol. 203 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Maternity Hospital Accommodation.

4.

asked the Minister for Health whether his attention has been drawn to the 1962 annual report of the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, in which the urgent need for a larger number of beds is emphasised; whether his Department have sanctioned the plans for a limited extension of forty beds for this hospital; if so, what is the present position with regard to this extension; and whether plans for any other extensions are at present under consideration.

I have seen the annual report of the National Maternity Hospital for 1962. An application made to me for a grant from the Hospitals Trust Fund towards the cost of providing a 50-bed extension to the hospital is being considered and I hope to reach a decision on it shortly.

A number of other extensions to the hospital have been proposed, including extension of the outpatient department and the laboratory, and the replacement of the extern infants' unit. The hospital authorities have indicated, however, that they consider the provision of additional maternity beds to be the most pressing need at present.
