Vol. 203 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retention of Civil Servants.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance the circumstances in which civil servants are retained beyond the normal retiring age; how many are at present so retained; if he is aware that civil servants with approved Old IRA service were refused an extension of service because their pensions were in excess of £450 a year; and how many were refused an extension for this reason.

An extension of service beyond the normal retiring age may be granted to any civil servant on grounds of public interest, hardship or national service or in accordance with the provisions of Section 8 (4) of the Civil Service Regulation Act, 1956. The number of civil servants at present retained beyond the normal retiring age is 936. The number of civil servants with approved Old IRA service who were refused an extension of service because their pensions were in excess of the limit specified in the regulations governing the retention of civil servants beyond the age limit was 15.
