Vol. 203 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Flood Damage.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the severe damage caused to property by the flooding on June 11th and the losses sustained by many persons in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown constituency and other areas, he will provide compensation from State funds on a basis similar to that provided in 1954.

Relief of distress is a matter for the local authority in the first instance. It is not considered that the circumstances of June 11 would justify exceptional relief from State funds such as was afforded on the occasion of the Tolka flooding in 1954 which severely affected large numbers of persons in poor circumstances.

Persons who have suffered damage of a structural nature to their private dwellings can apply to the Department of Local Government for a grant under the Housing Acts towards the cost of repairing the damage. Local authorities are empowered to make supplementary grants for the same purpose, if they so wish, and may apply for loans from the Local Loans Fund for the purpose.
