Vol. 203 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Berthage Facilities for Dutch Navy Vessels.

23.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if five vessels of the Dutch navy were refused facilities for berthage at Dublin Port: and, if so, if he will inform maritime nations whose naval vessels may visit this country that ample facilities and a generous welcome will at all times be available at Blacksod and Broadhaven on the North Mayo coast.

A request was received on 19th April last from the Netherlands Government for permission for an unofficial visit to Dublin in the period between 31st May to 4th June of a Netherlands naval task force of five ships. Such a visit would have been welcome but it was found, following consultation with the Department of Defence and the Dublin portal authorities, that it would be impossible to provide the berthing facilities required by three of the ships involved —an aircraft carrier and two submarines. In the case of the aircraft carrier in particular, the taking on of the necessary water supplies would require alongside berthage which is not available in Blacksod and Broadhaven.
