Vol. 203 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Road Reconstruction.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the increasing importance of Wexford as a tourist centre, he will consider giving a more liberal grant for road reconstruction to enable the local authority to carry out the necessary work to meet the situation.

The needs of tourist roads are among the considerations which councils will normally take into account in deciding on the distribution of their roads resources, including their Road Fund grants. The total of road improvement grants allocated to Wexford County Council this year is £18,400 higher than in 1962-63.

Could the Minister indicate if there is any tourist road grant for Wexford?

Could the Minister indicate why?

There never has been.

If Donegal and other counties are entitled to a tourist grant, why is Wexford not entitled to one?

For the simple reason that Donegal is a congested area; Wexford is not.

Is it not a fact that counties outside the congested areas get tourist grants while Wexford does not?

Not necessarily.

Would the Minister indicate the counties outside, other than Wexford, that do not get a grant?

Some other time, when the question is directed to that end.
