Vol. 203 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Building Industry.

7.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of men engaged in the building industry in each of the years ended 31st March, 1962 and 1963.

No comprehensive current statistics are available of the total number of persons engaged in the building industry. However, with certain exceptions, manual workers 16 years of age and over in the building industry and in certain specified employments in civil engineering and the painting trades are compulsorily insured against interruption of employment due to bad weather. On the basis of the number of stamps sold in each year in respect of such insurance, it is estimated that the average weekly numbers employed in these activities during the years ended 31 March, 1962 and 1963, were 29,709 and 32,359 respectively.
