Vol. 203 No. 8

Written Answers. - University Scholarships.

124.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Education if he can state the proportion of scholarships available from local or central authorities or from both to universities, reckoned as a percentage of the total places available in universities, in (a) the Republic, (b) Queen's University, Belfast, (c) Great Britain, (d) France, (e) Sweden, and (f) West Germany.

The information requested in relation to Queen's University, Belfast, Great Britain, France, Sweden and West Germany is not available.

In the academic year 1961-62 (the last year for which statistics are available), 6.8 per cent of the full-time students in Irish universities who were domiciled in the State were in receipt of scholarships from local authorities or from State funds.

It is to be expected, however, that this proportion will increase substantially over the next few years in consequence of the operation of the Local Authorities (Education Scholarships) (Amendment) Act, 1961. For example, the total of scholarships awarded by local authorities and the State increased from 161 in 1961-62 to 266 in 1962-63.
