Vol. 204 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits in Wicklow Town.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there is no speed limit in operation in Newtownmountkennedy, Ashford and Rathnew, County Wicklow; and if, in view of the increased motor traffic through these villages in the summer months, he will consider providing for a speed limit at least at week-ends.

I am aware that no built-up area or special speed limit is in operation in the places in question.

The technical committee set up to consider the position in County Wicklow did not recommend the imposition of speed limits in these villages; neither did the county council. Consequently the regulations do not apply either built-up area or special speed limits in these places.

As I indicated in reply to a question by the Deputy on 21st February last, the operation of the speed limits will be kept under annual review by the local technical committees. The first such review will take place towards the end of the present year and it is open to interested persons to make suggestions regarding changes they would like to have made to the local authority for consideration by the technical committee in due course.

With regard to "week-end" speed limits, the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) Regulations, 1963 do not provide for occasional speed limits.
