Vol. 204 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Midleton (Cork) Telephone Service.

34.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, further to a statement in February last that it was expected that an automatic telephone service would be introduced in the Midleton, County Cork area during June, 1963, he is aware that such a service has not yet been introduced; if he will state the reasons for the delay; and if, having regard to the chaotic state of the existing telephone service in the area, he will take immediate steps to have an automatic system installed.

35.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in the introduction of the automatic telephone service in Midleton area, County Cork.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 34 and 35 together. The new automatic telephone exchange at Midleton has been installed and final testing under simulated traffic conditions is in progress. Transfer of subscribers to the new exchange is expected to be effected in 2 to 3 weeks' time. In the meantime the best standard of service possible with the existing manual equipment will be provided.
