Vol. 204 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rosslare Harbour-Wexford Road.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the need for major reconstruction of the Rosslare Harbour— Wexford road to deal with the increasing ferry service to that port; and if he will make the requisite grant to cover this work.

I am aware that this road, although having a reasonably good surface, is nevertheless capable of improvement in width and alignment. As the Deputy is aware, the rate of improvement of this main road, and of the other roads in the county, must necessarily be related to the available resources. The Road Fund grants allocated to the Wexford County Council for the current year include a Main Road Improvement Grant of £50,600, which, in fact, shows an increase of £8,400 on that for the previous year. The selection of the works to which their Road Fund grants are to be applied rests with the council, in the first instance.

Does the Minister appreciate this road comes within the ambit of the tourist centre since it links the town of Wexford with the seaport of Rosslare Harbour, and would he not therefore consider allocating a tourist grant for the purpose of carrying out this very necessary work?

I have not got anything to add to what I said in my reply.

Could the Minister tell me why he could not give a tourist grant for this work?

Because I have already allocated the tourist grant fund. Is that not one good reason?

Would he consider it in the future?
