Vol. 205 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Household Budget Inquiry.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will consider holding a household budget inquiry similar to that held in this country in 1951-52 to ascertain changes in the pattern of household spending which have occurred over the past decade, and to ensure up-to-date and accurate calculation of the consumer price index figures.

The acute shortage of technical staff in the Central Statistics Office has delayed the planning for the Household Budget Inquiry which it was proposed to start in 1963. The situation in that respect has now improved somewhat and a start has been made on the necessary preliminary work. It is hoped to begin the inquiry in 1964.
