Vol. 205 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strontium 90 in Milk.

1.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Health the quantity of strontium 90 in milk in this country in last May and in May, 1962.

According to the settled scheme of testing for Strontium 90 in milk, samples taken in each period of approximately six weeks are bulk tested. Samples taken in the first half, approximately, of May are bulk tested with the samples taken in April and those taken in the later half of May are bulk tested with those taken in June. The average levels of Strontium 90 per gram of calcium in samples tested over the periods April to June in 1962 and 1963 were 18.5 and 34.5 micro-micro curies respectively. The maximum level compatible with safety is many times greater than these figures and the levels found have at no time given cause for anxiety.
