Vol. 205 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of Farthings.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the shortage of farthings is causing inconvenience and disquiet to the public and shopkeepers alike, as a halfpenny tax is being charged on small goods, whereas one farthing would meet the tax; and if he is prepared to ensure that there is an ample supply of farthings.

The Central Bank is not aware of any shortage of farthings. It maintains a stock which is available for issue in the ordinary way through the commercial banks and which is adequate to meet demand for a considerable period ahead.

Is the Minister aware that the people do not seriously object to the 2½ per cent tax, that it is the profiteering they object to? Does the Minister believe that there is a conspiracy by business people to give an advantage to the Opposition by deliberately profiteering?

(Interruptions.)
