Vol. 205 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo-Leitrim Railway Track.

23.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that there have been many complaints by local farmers regarding the condition of fences etc., along the Glenfarne to Collooney section of the old Sligo-Leitrim railway track; and whether his Department have received any proposals in relation to this portion of the track.

I am not aware of any complaints in regard to the Glenfarne to Collooney section of the former Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties railway.

This railway line was abandoned by the SL and NC Railway in accordance with the provisions of the Transport Acts. The company continued to be liable for maintenance of fences and other accommodation works but, alternatively, were entitled to cease such maintenance subject to compensation for injury or damages to adjoining owners and occupiers caused by such cesser.

The company which was registered in Northern Ireland has been wound up in the courts there. On liquidation the claims of debenture holders, which enjoyed priority in law, absorbed all available funds leaving nothing to meet possible claims for compensation.
