Vol. 205 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Boat Construction.

53.

asked the Minister for Lands the approximate cost of building a thirty-eight feet lobster boat in the following boatyards: (a) Meevagh and (b) Killybegs, County Donegal, (c) Baltimore, Cork, and (d) Dingle, County Kerry.

Standard prices are charged for boats built by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara irrespective of the yards at which they are built and separate cost figures are not published for individual yards. For lobster fishing, boats of 26 and 32 feet in length are more usual than those of 38 feet and the approximate prices currently charged by the Board for new boats are—

26 feet--£950,

38 feet--£8,800 and

38 feet--£8,800.

There is, of course, a capital grant of 25 per cent of the cost in each case, which grant was introduced by the present Government.

Is it not a fact that An Bord Iascaigh Mhara say it costs more to build a boat in Meevagh and that is the only reason why they are not anxious to settle the dispute?

We are anxious to settle the dispute.

The remaining questions for oral answer will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
