Vol. 206 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Library.

20.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance the present position of the plan for a new National Library; and if he will state in particular (a) the date upon which the site was purchased, (b) what steps have since been taken, (c) when detailed plans will be prepared, (d) when tenders will be invited, (e) when building operations will commence, and (f) when building will be completed.

The site for a new National Library at Morehampton Road. Donnybrook, was purchased in October, 1961.

Because of the volume of other urgent work falling to be dealt with by the Office of Public Works, it has not so far been possible to do anything in the way of preparing plans for the new building, and I regret, therefore, that I am not at present in a position to supply the information required at (c) to (f) of the Deputy's question.

I might perhaps mention that on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the extent of the accommodation which will be required, it is provisionally estimated that the cost of the project will be of the order of £1¼ million.
