Vol. 206 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Donegal River.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give favourable consideration to the request to have the River Finn cleaned in view of the fact that the Northern authorities are at present engaged on the right bank of the river.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance if, pending the drainage of the River Finn in County Donegal, he will clear the mill carry above Killygordon, and thus help to partially clear flooded arable land.

As questions Nos. 21 and 22 both concern the same catchment area, I will, with your permission, take them together.

This catchment as I have already indicated in reply to previous questions is included in the arterial drainage programme; it is No. 26 on the priority list of major catchments and will be dealt with in its turn in due course.

Arterial drainage of a catchment can be carried out only on the basis of a comprehensive scheme for the entire catchment and piecemeal works such as removal of obstructions at Killygordon in anticipation of such a scheme are contrary to settled policy.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say what number in the list of priorities we have now arrived at?

The survey of No. 17 commenced this year and it will be many years before this catchment can be tackled.

I did not quite catch the Parliamentary Secretary. How many years did he say?

Many, many years.
