Vol. 206 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport to Swinford (Mayo) Schools.

29.

asked the Minister for Education if he will arrange for the payment of a subsidy for the transport of students to commercial, secondary and vocational schools in Swinford, County Mayo on a basis similar to that in operation in the Erris area of County Mayo.

I am not empowered to pay a subsidy for the transport of students to vocational schools and neither are vocational education committees. It is open to vocational education committees, however, subject to my sanction, to provide a limited number of travel scholarships awarded on the results of a competitive examination held before the commencement of the school year and confined to young persons living five miles or more from the nearest day vocational school.

There are no funds available to my Department from which a grant could be made towards the cost of conveying children to secondary schools.
