Vol. 206 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Nurses.

7.

asked the Minister for Health if nurses who have done their training in hospitals other than in the State are eligible for appointment to local authority or other hospitals under his jurisdiction.

In general, qualifications for nurses in local authority institutions and in the Central Mental Hospital, which is the only hospital under my jurisdiction, provide that any person holding a nursing office must be registered in the appropriate division of the Register of Nurses kept by An Bord Altranais.

Under their Rules, An Bord Altranais recognise for purposes of registration qualifications of nurses trained in institutions in Great Britain and Northern Ireland approved by the registration authorities there. In the cases of nurses trained in other countries I understand that it is the practice of the Board to consider each case on its merits. When the Board admit to registration, the persons concerned are eligible for appointment to the same extent as nurses trained in Irish hospitals but subject, of course, where appropriate to the requirements of the Immigration Acts.
