Vol. 206 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Roscommon Estate Roads.

47.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the bad condition of the network of roads leading through Mote Park Estate, Roscommon; and when a scheme for the improvement of these roads will be put into operation.

The roads through this estate were repaired by the Land Commission in conjunction with the allotment of these lands about two years ago. I understand that these estate roads were put into good condition by the Land Commission at that time but have since deteriorated.

While the Land Commission have no responsibility for road maintenance, the present position of these roads is being investigated in connection with the possibility of their being taken over by the county council.

If the Minister is prepared to put these roads into a proper state of repair, is he aware the county council are only too willing to take over the permanent maintenance of them, and will the Minister agree that funds to put the roads into a reasonable state of repair should be made available by him?

On the Budget Estimate for this estate, a substantial sum of money, nearly £2,400, was proposed for repairs there. I understand discussions are going on with the county council, with the purpose of coming to some agreement about the council taking over the roads in consideration for the Land Commission doing some minor repairs.

Is the Minister prepared to say whether the Department are willing to co-operate with the council in relation to these proposals put forward by the council?

I understand that some consideration is given to the approach made by the council to the Land Commission. As a result of that approach, I anticipate some action will be taken soon.
