Vol. 206 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Terenure (Dublin) School.

64.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made regarding the provision of (a) temporary prefabricated classrooms and (b) additional seating accommodation to overcome the crowding at Terenure boys' national school.

The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to carry out the necessary arrangements with a view to the erection and furnishing of prefabricated classrooms to relieve the overcrowding at Terenure boy's national school.

Is it true that in some of these schools there are up to 60 or 70 pupils in one classroom?

There are still some very big classes in some of the Dublin schools.

Up to 60 or 70 pupils in one room?

I shall not say more to the Minister than that I hope he is conscious of his obligations.

Each year we have been able to improve the staff relationship as we get more teachers available and more buildings.

Will the Minister say if these prefabricated classrooms are readily available? Is the supply limited?

Not a big number of firms is in the business of making these at present but they are fairly readily available.

It is not a question for the Minister for Education but I was prompted to ask on other questions if these could not be used to house those who find themselves homeless in Dublin city? That is something for the Government to consider. I am told these buildings are quite comfortable.
