Vol. 206 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Blackrock (Dublin) Parking Hours.

75.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has received representations from the Dún Laoghaire Corporation suggesting altered parking arrangements at Blackrock; and, if in view of the damage and loss sustained by traders he will consider permitting parking on alternate days in Blackrock between the hours of 10.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.

Parking restrictions are determined by formal bye-laws made by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, with the consent of the Minister for Local Government. The existing bye-laws were made only this year, after full consideration of all relevant circumstances, including representations by or on behalf of the traders concerned and, as far as the Garda Síochána are concerned, no change on the lines suggested is contemplated.

Is the Minister aware of the serious inconvenience and loss to traders as a result of the existing parking regulations and would he consider amending them in the manner set out, at least for a trial period?

I am not so aware. In fact very few shopping centres, if any, in Dublin are so well equipped with off-street parking in their immediate vicinity as this centre is. As the Deputy is aware, this particular piece of thoroughfare is probably the most heavily used thoroughfare in the whole country.

It is heavily used but not at the times suggested.

At all times.
