Vol. 206 No. 8

Committee on Finance. - Secondary Teachers' Superannuation (Amendment) (No. 2) Scheme, 1963: Motion of Confirmation.

I move:

That the Secondary Teachers' Superannuation (Amendment) (No. 2) Scheme, 1963, prepared by the Minister for Education, with the consent of the Minister for Finance, under Section 2 of the Teachers' (Superannuation) Act, 1928 and laid before the House on the 9th day of December, 1963, be confirmed.

This amendment, agreed at conciliation, to the Secondary Teachers' Superannuation Scheme brings the position of the married secondary teacher into line with that of the married woman national teacher. It provides that a woman who entered the service before 1st August, 1963, and who retires on marriage may, as heretofore, if she so desires, be paid a marriage gratuity but that a marriage gratuity will not be paid to a person entering the service after 1st August, 1963. It provides also that a person who has received a marriage gratuity on retiring may again enter the service on incremental salary by paying back that marriage gratuity with compound interest thereon at the rate of five per cent. This was agreed through conciliation machinery.

This simply operates to give effect to the position recorded through the conciliation machinery?

That is right.

We have no objection.

Question put and agreed to.
