Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Intake and Strength.

145.

asked the Minister for Justice the estimated intake into the Garda Síochána in each of the years 1964 to 1970 inclusive.

It would not be possible to estimate with any accuracy the numbers who will be recruited to the Force in the years up to 1970. To compile such an estimate it would be necessary to make forecasts of the strength of the Force in each of those years and also of the number of members who will retire voluntarily. These are matters in relation to which it is difficult to do more than to speculate.

The best I can do by way of reply to the question is to give, with considerable reservations, a general indication of probable intake. On the basis that the strength of the Force will remain constant, the indications are that in the years 1964, 1965, and 1966, intake will be about 400 per year; in the years 1967 and 1968 it will be about 350 a year and in the years 1969 and 1970 it will be about 300 a year.

146.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is satisfied that the existing strength of the Garda Síochána is sufficient to enable them to deal with crime prevention, detection, reform and deterrence; and, if not, if he will consider increasing their strength forthwith.

The adequacy of Garda strength to meet requirements is the subject of constant review.
