Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Templemore (Tipperary) Garda Depot.

156.

asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of the reconstruction for the Garda Training Depot at Templemore, County Tipperary, and the total cost of furnishing the same.

The building works at Templemore for the new Garda Training Centre include the provision of a number of new buildings as well as the reconstruction of old ones. The total cost of the entire building project is estimated at £580,000 of which £310,000 is attributable to new buildings, and £270,000 to reconstruction works. The total cost of furnishing the Training Centre is estimated at £20,000.

Could the Minister tell me what the cost per recruit will be, based on the number of recruits it is estimated will pass through in, say, the next ten years?

I am not sure that such a figure would be of any great value to anybody. I would hazard a guess. It might be about £100 per recruit. In the next ten years, we will put through, I suppose, 400 a year, that is, 4,000 recruits in ten years, roughly as I have said.

That is a nice easy way. The Minister for Finance has to pay interest and sinking fund.

I thought you were in favour of decentralisation.

I am in favour of spending the people's money wisely, not on a wildcat scheme like this.

There has been some misunderstanding about this. I want to say that a new Garda training depot had to be provided anyway and the cost would have been £400,000, £500,000 or £600,000 or maybe more in Dublin.

That is not so.

It is so.

We will have that argument on the Estimate, another day.

The only argument was where the new Garda training depot was to go.
