Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hire-Purchase.

20.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any amendment of the Hire Purchase Acts is contemplated; and, if so, in what respects.

Further amendment of the Hire-Purchase Acts is not contemplated at present.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will have immediate steps taken to prevent hire-purchase companies from charging outrageous interest and fees on moneys advanced by them, as evidenced by a recent case (particulars supplied).

The rights and obligations of the contracting parties to a hire-purchase agreement are regulated by the Hire-Purchase Acts, and I am satisfied that adequate protection for the rights of hirers is provided by the courts under those Acts. There is no evidence before me which would indicate the necessity for action on the lines suggested by the Deputy.
